Whole Earth Labs was founded by Dan Kanefsky, drawing on years of backend engineering at both large tech companies and early-stage startups. Watching what worked and what didn't shaped a clear belief: the best software is transparent about what it does and honest about its limitations.

A note on the name: Whole Earth Labs is inspired by, but unaffiliated with, the Whole Earth Catalog, Stewart Brand's landmark publication. The Catalog's ethos of democratizing access to tools and knowledge has shaped how we think about software, and we offer it our sincere homage.
